Data Systems Intern (Platform Build – Early Stage)
Role Description
**About the company**
We’re building a freight platform from the ground up with a different starting point.
Most of the industry still runs on fragmented data, transactional pricing, and short-term decisions. The goal here is to build something more structured and more durable — where data supports better decisions, carriers are treated as long-term partners, and pricing isn’t just optimized for the next shipment.
There’s also a bigger layer to this over time. The business is being built with a focus on sustainability, accountability, and building something that creates value beyond just shareholders, including a long-term commitment to community impact.
Right now, it’s early. Which means the work is hands-on, a bit undefined, and real.
**What you’ll work on**
* Setting up and organizing data models in Supabase or a similar tool
* Figuring out how we capture carrier information, lane data, and rate structures
* Structuring pricing inputs (LTL, TL, fuel, accessorials)
* Supporting both transactional pricing and customer-specific rate setups
* Creating simple intake processes (forms or workflows)
* Writing basic documentation so someone else can pick this up later
**Where this is going**
The goal isn’t just to store data. It’s to build something that can actually support:
* long-term carrier relationships, not just one-off shipments
* clearer, more usable data for decision-making
* pricing models that go beyond simple transactional quoting
There’s also a broader intent behind the business over time:
* moving toward more practical sustainability and ESG alignment
* building something that creates value beyond just shareholders
* committing to community impact (including a long-term food bank contribution model)
You don’t need to be an expert in any of that, but you should be interested in building something a bit more intentional.
**What we’re looking for**
* Some experience with databases (Supabase, SQL, or similar)
* Someone who thinks logically and can organize messy information
* Comfortable figuring things out without constant direction
* Interest in building real systems, not just theoretical projects
**Nice to have (not required)**
* Basic understanding of APIs or how applications use backend data
* Exposure to automation tools like Zapier or similar
* Curiosity about AI tools and how structured data connects to them
* General interest in how backend systems connect to a frontend
**Details**
* 4–6 week starting term, with the option to extend
* Around 15 hours per week
* Paid hourly (final structure depends on candidate and any funding support)
* Some in-person working time in the Burnaby/Vancouver area
**Why this role is interesting**
If you’re looking for a more traditional internship, this probably isn’t it.
But if you want a hands-on build — working out of a coworking space with people trying to do freight differently and push back on some of the old-school ways — this might be a fit.
There’s space here to think beyond just transactions. That includes conversations around Indigenous relations across Western Canada, ESG considerations in freight, and practical paths to decarbonization — whether through asset-based carriers or how data and platform design can support better decisions.
The goal isn’t just to talk about those ideas, but to figure out how they actually show up in a real business — and how they get built into the system from the start.
If you want a cool, hands-on build, working in a coworking space with people trying to do freight differently and challenge some old-school thinking — apply.
