Part-Time Structural Engineering Intern / Design Assistant
Role Description
Timberland Structural is a residential structural engineering firm based in Littleton, Colorado. We design foundations, framing, beams, remodels, additions, decks, and other structural systems for residential projects throughout Colorado.
We are looking for a part-time **Structural Engineering Intern / Design Assistant** to help with residential structural design support under the supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer.
This role is ideal for a civil engineering student, recent graduate, or EIT who wants practical, hands-on experience with real residential structural projects.
This is not a high-level theory role. You will be helping with real projects, real drawings, real calculations, and real residential construction details.
**Responsibilities**
* Review architectural plans and help identify structural design scope
* Assist with tributary area and load takeoffs
* Prepare beam, header, post, joist, rafter, and ridge beam sizing information
* Help organize calculation packages and design notes
* Use engineering software, spreadsheets, and span tables under PE supervision
* Prepare preliminary structural redline notes for review
* Draft simple inspection letters or design summaries from engineer notes
* Coordinate with drafting staff to clarify structural design intent
* Help build internal standard design tables, checklists, and procedures
* Organize project information, questions, assumptions, and calculation outputs
**Qualifications**
* Current civil/structural engineering student, recent graduate, or EIT preferred
* Interest in residential structural engineering
* Comfortable reading architectural and structural drawings
* Strong math, organization, and attention to detail
* Reliable and able to follow written instructions
* Able to ask clear questions when something is unclear
* Available to work a fixed part-time schedule
* Familiarity with wood framing, residential construction, AutoCAD, Revit, Chief Architect, Bluebeam, Excel, or engineering software is helpful but not required
**Important Note**
All engineering work will be reviewed and approved by a licensed Professional Engineer before anything is issued. This role supports design production and does not carry independent engineering responsibility.
