3D Beam Steering by Autonomous Machine Vision for Conveyor-Based Object Scanning and Identification

Amsterdam Zuid, Netherlands
2026-03-04

Role Description

**Company Information** Veridis wants to create a better future for humanity and the planet. Our mission is to deliver key recycling technologies to advance the transition to a circular economy. We are trying to create a place of work where scientists and engineers can develop technical opportunities to benefit society and the climate. To achieve these objectives, we offer a challenging internship with flexible working hours, an informal atmosphere, and a lot of independence and responsibility. **Assignment Description** We are developing a **deep-ultraviolet (DUV) Raman Spectroscopy system** capable of real-time analysis of irregularly shaped objects on a conveyor belt. To enable precise on-the-fly measurements, the system must dynamically track moving objects and steer a focused laser beam to an optimal point on their surface. You will contribute to the development and validation of an **autonomous DUV Raman beam steering and focus control** system, to advance its commercialization. The work is aimed at developing a **machine-vision module** that can automatically communicate with the beam steering system for the identification of passing objects, by characterizing their physical dimensions. We are looking for a motivated, skilled and self-sufficient intern in the field of **system/electronic engineering**, or a related field, with affinity to **mechatronics** and optics for a hands-on internship. If you match this description, we would like to have you help us develop our unique technology for the field of plastic recycling. *Internship Goal* In this role, you will work directly with the Raman prototype to: * Track irregularly shaped objects moving on a conveyor belt using Machine Vision. * Steer the DeepUV excitation beam in X and Y via moveable mirrors. * Adjust focus in Z using a movable precision lens. * Maintain beam alignment and optimal focus on the target throughout dynamic motion. * Integrate machine vision data with actuator controls through robust serial communication protocols. This internship focuses on real-world system integration, control optimization, and performance validation within an operational Deep-UV Raman spectroscopy platform. *Impact \& Next Steps* This project is a part of the development of a novel operational Deep-UV Raman prototype in the field of waste sorting and recycling. The focus is on high-speed machine vision integration with the beam steering and focus control hardware. This will enable autonomous operation of a novel spectroscopic technique in the recycling industry, directly impacting sustainability goals. Successful performance at this stage ensures that the real Deep-UV Raman platform achieves robust, high-speed beam positioning and focus control under operational conditions, minimizing integration risk and enabling reliable spectroscopic acquisition. **Intern Profile** You’ll work in a **young, fast-paced start-up** with a **multidisciplinary team** experienced in mechatronics, hardware interfacing, optics, and spectroscopy. You’ll receive: * **Hands-on support** for hardware prototyping and system integration. * **Regular feedback** on software, machine vision, and control logic. * Exposure to **system-level engineering** and real-world development cycles. *Scope of Work \& Deliverables* * Machine Vision for Visual Identification * Integration \& Communication with main system * System Testbed: Performance and Latency * Documentation \& Transferability **Requirements** * Python or C\+\+ for hardware interfacing (e.g. with OpenCV, PySerial, or similar) * Familiarity with machine vision libraries (e.g. OpenCV, Halcon, or similar) * Familiarity with serial communication (communication bus) **Preferences** * Experience with Machine Vision based systems * Experience with real-time control systems * Familiarity with ROS or similar middleware Note that we can only consider students that are situated in the Netherlands during the duration of the internship. Please send your CV and list of grades to info@veridis.tech. We are constantly improving and advancing in our theoretical research, product development, value proposition, market research, etc. Since this requires a lot of work, we are always looking for people that want to join us in our journey to a better future. Are you interested in working for us or are you looking for an internship? Please contact us via info@veridis.tech or the email listed on the specific vacancy.
