STEM Education Intern (Drone Development)
Role Description
**STEM Internship Scheme – Summer 2026**
This internship opportunity is currently open to students from our partner universities under the STEM Internship Scheme, including **City University of Hong Kong** and **The Hong Kong Polytechnic University**.
The "low-altitude economy" is rapidly changing global logistics and business models. To equip the next generation with relevant knowledge early on, we are launching a new STEM education project to develop a logistics drone teaching kit specifically designed for students. As an intern, you will participate in the research and development of a teaching drone capable of grabbing, transporting, and accurately dropping items. This product will be used in local courses and various STEM exhibitions in the future, so safety and educational value of the product are our top priorities. This is an excellent opportunity combining hardware engineering, programming, and educational innovation, allowing you to build a technological product that impacts the next generation.
**Job Responsibilities**
* Hardware R\&D and Design: Assist in designing and manufacturing the mechanical structure of the drone, focusing on developing payload components to achieve the functions of "grabbing, transporting, and dropping."
* Safety and Protective Design: Prioritizing safety for educational and indoor scenarios, design comprehensive protective gear for the drone (e.g., fully enclosed propeller guards, collision sensing) to ensure students are not injured during operation.
* Flight Control Setup and Programming: Assist in setting up the drone's flight control system, write and optimize control programs to ensure flight stability and operational accuracy when carrying payloads.
* Teaching Material Assistance: Translate the drone's operating principles and the application scenarios of the "low-altitude economy" into engaging STEM teaching materials and user guides.
* Prototype Testing and Optimization: Conduct repeated flight and payload tests in simulated teaching environments to identify potential risks and continuously optimize the durability of the kit.
**Job Requirements**
* Currently pursuing a higher education degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electronic, Automation, etc.), Computer Science, Product Design, or related disciplines.
* Familiar with the operation and application of microcontrollers and single-board computers such as Arduino and Raspberry Pi.
* Possess basic programming skills (e.g., Python, C/C\+\+) and be capable of writing hardware control programs and integrating various sensors or motors.
* Have a basic understanding or strong interest in drone technology (open-source flight controllers) and Internet of Things (IoT) technology.
* High Safety Awareness: Understand the potential risks of electronic hardware and drone operations, and proactively propose defensive designs in the early development stages.
* Possess innovative thinking, hands-on problem-solving skills, and a passion for promoting STEM innovation and tech education.
* Bonus (Not Compulsory): Have 3D modeling/CAD experience (e.g., Fusion 360, SolidWorks) and the ability to use 3D printers to quickly prototype drone protective accessories or grabber components.
**What You Can Expect**
* Free use of 3D Printer
* Real-world Impact: The drone teaching kit you help develop will have the chance to be directly applied in local STEM courses or large-scale educational exhibitions, allowing you to witness firsthand how your design inspires the next generation.
* Cross-disciplinary Skill Development: By integrating Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and underlying drone technologies, you will gain highly valuable practical experience in software/hardware integration, electromechanical design, and engineering problem-solving that goes far beyond classroom learning.
* Professional Mentorship: Work closely with a team with a strong background in technology and educational development. We are happy to share industry experience to build a solid foundation for your future career in engineering, tech innovation, or education.
* Room for Innovation: We encourage trial and error and innovation. In this project focused on the cutting-edge concept of the "low-altitude economy," you will have ample space to test different payloads and drop mechanisms, fully unleashing your engineering creativity.
* Ongoing Collaboration Opportunities: We highly value and cherish outstanding talent. For interns who perform exceptionally well and demonstrate passion and problem-solving skills during the internship, we will explore further development opportunities upon completion of the program. You may have the chance to continue participating in the team's subsequent development through flexible collaboration models, witnessing the product launch with us!
