Master Thesis: Phase 2 – Advanced HMI Development and System Integration for Industrial X-ray system
Role Description
**Master Thesis: Phase 2 – Advanced HMI Development and System Integration for Industrial X-ray Inspection Systems**
**Start:** From July 2026 or by arrangement
**Background**
XRAY-LAB GmbH \& Co. KG develops industrial X-ray and CT inspection systems used for non destructive testing (NDT). As part of an ongoing software platform development, the Human-Machine Interface (HMI) for the X-ray inspection machine is being implemented in multiple phases.
**Phase 1 of the HMI development has already been completed** as part of a previous Master’s thesis and delivered a functional, industrial-grade HMI foundation. This **Phase 2 Master’s thesis** builds directly on that foundation and focuses on advanced HMI features, imaging tools, calibration workflows, maintenance functions, and extended PLC communication.
**Your Thesis Topic**
The objective of this thesis is to extend and enhance the existing HMI with advanced functionality, focusing on usability, imaging quality, calibration, maintenance, and scalable communication.
**Your Tasks**
* Extend the existing HMI framework for industrial X-ray inspection systems with advanced imaging tools (filters, histogram analysis, line pro
* Design and implement multi-mode calibration workflows with interactive visualization of calibration results.
* Enhance the HMI with extended maintenance and service functions, including diagnostic views, system monitoring, and structured event logging.
* Align manipulator hardware concepts with HMI control and visualization, ensuring intuitive operator interaction (X, Y, Z axes; tilt/rotation support optional).
* Expand PLC communication using OPC UA and optionally other communication protocols to support multiple industrial PLC vendors.
* Implement modular, maintainable software architecture for the HMI with focus on usability, scalability, and documentation.
* Validate implemented features against defined HMI requirements and produce clear documentation for software structure, workflows, and communication interfaces.
* Support integration testing with existing Phase 1 HMI features and connected hardware modules and converting it to .NET 10 from .NET 8\.
**Your Profile**
* Ongoing Master’s degree in Electronics, Mechatronics, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
* Basic experience with SPS/PLC programming (Siemens TIA Portal, Beckhoff TwinCAT, or equivalent).
* Basic understanding of Databases (SQLite) and communication protocols like OPC UA/ADS.
* Experience with C#, .NET, C\+\+, or similar technologies is a plus
* Interest in industrial automation, control systems, and human-machine interfaces.
* Structured, independent working style with interest in applied industrial research
* Proficient German and English language skills are required.
