Role Description
**Geospatial Analyst Intern**
Conservation International protects nature for the benefit of humanity. Through science, policy, fieldwork, and finance, we spotlight and secure the most important places in nature for the climate, biodiversity, and for people. With offices in 30 countries and projects in more than 100 countries, Conservation International partners with governments, companies, civil society, Indigenous peoples, and local communities to help people and nature thrive together.
**POSITION SUMMARY - This position is based in Singapore**
Conservation International’s Carbon Finance (CF) unit, housed within the Nature Finance Group (NFG), invests in high‑integrity. Natural Climate Solutions (NCS) that reduce deforestation, protect biodiversity, and conserve critical ecosystem services. These NCS solutions span the protection, enhanced management, and restoration of forests, rangelands, wetlands, peatlands, mangroves, and other natural systems across the region. The CF team sources and finances a strong pipeline of high‑quality carbon projects, applying innovative and results‑based financing models to ensure long‑term project sustainability and increase private‑sector participation in nature‑based climate action.
The CF team prioritizes impact beyond carbon — emphasizing community engagement, biodiversity protection and safeguards.This work ensures that the carbon credits generated meet the highest standards of integrity and co‑benefit delivery. Within this structure, the Asia Pacific Carbon Team leads the technical development of NCS carbon projects throughout the region. The team works across a wide range of ecosystems from tropical forests and peatlands to mangroves, blue carbon habitats, and mixed-use mosaic landscapes. The team provides the scientific, geospatial, policy, and implementation expertise required to advance early‑stage opportunities into fully developed, verifiable carbon projects.
Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing are key components for the operations of these conservation projects which rely on spatial analyses to support protected area management and the quantification of carbon emissions. As part of Asia Pacific Carbon Team, this role will contribute directly to the analytical and spatial science foundations of high‑integrity carbon projects and gain hands‑on exposure to the technical realities of natural climate solutions development across the Asia-Pacific.
Professional Growth Opportunity:
Interns will have the opportunity to interact and work alongside professionals in Singapore’s carbon services and trading sector, gaining insight into the technical and operational landscape of carbon project development in the region. Interns will receive hands-on experience on the implementation of geospatial workflows directly supporting carbon and nature-based solutions project development.
Through this exposure, interns will see how Singapore’s carbon‑hub ecosystem depends on technical talent capable of interpreting spatial data, validating land‑use change, and applying science‑based methods that meet or surpass regional and global integrity expectations.
Interns will also get to observe how geospatial science connects with policy development, safeguards, carbon accounting rules, and NCS finance, gaining interdisciplinary insights that reflect real‑world carbon project delivery.
We are looking for intern candidates who:
* Have a love for maps, keen eye for design, and a desire to expand their GIS skillsets
* Motivated and able to independently manage their time and workflow
* Communicate and coordinate effectively in a team and across the organization
Graduate level interns may expect an expanded scope to align with their graduate studies.
Preference will be given to candidates who can work full time over the summer from May 2026 - July 2026 and are open to continue their internship (part time or full time) during the following semester.
**RESPONSIBILITIES**
* Working with the Asia Pacific Carbon Team and collaborating with colleagues across relevant CI Country programs, the intern will provide support in the following areas:
* Support the geospatial workflow of REDD\+ project MRV (monitoring, reporting, and verification) throughout priority sites in Southeast Asia, in partnership with regional technical groups
* Conduct land cover map statistical sampling and accuracy assessments using satellite data and cloud-based GIS tools (e.g., Collect Earth Online).
* Collaborate with field teams to conduct remote-sensing and field validation of geospatial data.
* Assist with geospatial analysis, machine-learning algorithm development, and database management for projects in the Asia-Pacific Region, applying advanced remote sensing methods and GIS platforms such as ArcGIS, QGIS, and Google Earth Engine.
* Perform geospatial analyses, data acquisition, and cartographic mapping for other carbon and nature-based solutions projects in CI.
* Prepare and deliver at least one presentation of internship work to a Singaporean audience (e.g., school, university, or community group), supporting sector outreach and education. Professional growth activity: Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
**WORKING CONDITIONS**
* Typical office environment, based in Singapore.
* Travel in the region may be expected.
**QUALIFICATIONS**
**Required**
* Current enrolment in a university program (undergraduate or Master’s), or on a gap year between educational institutions, with a focus on Geography, Environmental Studies, Earth Systems Science, Spatial Analysis or related fields.
* Proficiency in spatial analysis, mapping, and the use of remote sensing and associated software (e.g. ArcGIS, QGIS, Google Earth Engine).
**Preferred**
* Independent thinker and worker.
* Advanced analytical skills.
* Understanding of statistical models.
* Works well in a team.
* Interest in forest management and mapping.
