Role Description
We are looking for a passionate and innovative Software Developer Intern to join our team. You will work at the intersection of mobile technology, cloud computing, and wireless connectivity. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a real-world product that enhances safety in smart buildings, construction sites, and heritage sites. You will assist in developing the digital "command center" that allows users to manage fire safety from their phones and dashboards.
**Key Responsibilities**
* Mobile \& Web Development: Assist in the development and maintenance of our cross-platform mobile application using React Native, ensuring a seamless user experience for receiving real-time push notifications regarding fire alerts.
* Backend \& Dashboard Support: Help maintain our cloud-based dashboard, potentially contributing to the Python backend that processes data and displays system health and incident history.
* IoT Integration: Collaborate with the hardware team to ensure smooth data flow from LoRa wireless sensors to the cloud gateway and mobile applications.
* Feature Implementation: Develop new features for the mobile app and web dashboard, focusing on displaying precise location data, hazard type, and severity to end-users.
* System Optimization: Work on improving the efficiency of data handling from low-power, long-range sensors to ensure reliable and fast communication.
* Testing \& Validation: Participate in testing the end-to-end system, from sensor trigger to mobile alert, ensuring reliability and nuisance-free operation.
**Required Skills \& Qualifications**
* Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
* Proficiency in Python for backend or scripting purposes.
* Experience with React Native for cross-platform mobile app development.
* Solid understanding of web development fundamentals.
* Strong interest in Internet of Things (IoT) architectures.
* Knowledge of LoRa or LoRaWAN wireless communication protocols and their application in low-power, wide-area networks.
* Familiarity with concepts related to smart cities and smart buildings.
* A keen interest in how technology can be applied to life safety systems, such as smart fire alarm monitoring.
* Ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic, research-driven environment at Hong Kong Science Park.
**What You Will Gain**
* Hands-on experience with a live IoT product deployed in the field.
* Mentorship from experienced engineers in a deep-tech startup environment.
* Exposure to the full technology stack, from wireless sensors to mobile apps.
* The opportunity to see your code contribute directly to public safety and operational efficiency in real-world use cases (Heritage buildings, construction sites, etc.).
* Insight into how AI is used to verify threats and reduce false alarms.
