Internship: Exploring Static vs. Dynamic Mooring Analysis (Open to Maritime / Coastal Engineering st
Role Description
Safe mooring of large container ships ( 300m, >9,000 TEU) has become increasingly more challenging. Do you want to make an impact in your internship and insight difference between a Static and Dynamic Mooring Analysis mooring? Discover the Dynamic Amplification Factor (DAF) and its impact on mooring line forces for large container ships. Dive into research on ship behaviour under diverse conditions, from wind speeds to mooring setups. If you're passionate about maritime engineering, join us!
The internship is expected to begin in September and will last for 3-6 months.
**What will you do**
--------------------
Safe mooring for large container ships (300m or longer, over 9,000 TEU) is becoming more difficult. These ships have a big side wind area, and their high mooring deck levels mean short, steep lines are often unavoidable. This can lead to unsafe mooring situations with high line tensions, risking winch slippage, line snapping, or bollard overloading. As consultants for port authorities and terminal operators, Haskoning studies mooring setups and ship behaviours to find ways to make mooring safer. Despite this, some companies still rely on static mooring analysis, which could lead to more unsafe situations as container ships continue to grow in size.
This internship focuses on analysing the Dynamic Amplification Factor (DAF), which compares maximum mooring line forces between static and dynamic analyses for large container ships. We'll explore how DAF varies based on factors like ship size, wind condition, mooring setup, and other parameters, including container stacks and cranes' impact on wind forces (using the lessons-learnt from Windlass \| MARIN).
**Where you will work**
-----------------------
At Haskoning, you will join an independent, employee-owned international consultancy that combines engineering, design, and consultancy services with software and technology. Our mission, "Enhancing Society Together," drives us to create a positive impact on the world.
We offer purpose-driven and challenging work in diverse international projects, leveraging our 140\+ years of expertise. With over 6,800 employees in more than 25 countries, we work together to turn challenges into opportunities and make a real impact on society. We collaborate with leading clients in markets such as infrastructure, climate resilience, renewable energy, decarbonisation of industry, and sustainable mobility.
You will become part of the Advisory Group Maritime Vietnam. Our team is based in Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam. We provide our clients, both private and (semi) governmental, with a range of services throughout the various phases of a project: from inception, through master planning, feasibility, design all the way to construction supervision. We have the head office in the Netherlands, but we operate worldwide.
**What you bring**
------------------
As an ideal candidate, your are enthusiastic about complex and data-driven analyses to enhance safety and efficiency in the maritime industry. You have strong analytical abilities with a keen eye for detail. You can communicate your ideas well. Besides that, the following applies to you:
* Currently pursuing a Master’s degree or in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, such as Civil, Marine or Offshore Engineering.
* Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, C#, or Java.
* Language Proficiency: Fluent in English and Vietnamese, both written and spoken.
* Interested in the difference between a Static and Dynamic Mooring Analysis for large container ships in wind.
**What we offer you**
---------------------
During your time at Haskoning, you will learn what it is like to work in a consultancy firm. You will be fully part of the team and as such, you are invited to participate in all team activities both project related and social activities. You will also receive a monthly allowance. Additionally:
* Haskoning has a significant track record in DMAs for over 20 years. By working in our office, you can learn much about mooring analysis in port engineering in a short time.
* You will learn how to use engineering software, developed by our company (DEFEND, MOOR2\) and Marin (DIFFRAC \| MARIN, aNySIM XMF \| MARIN), that is used in our mooring analyses. We have dedicated workflow for DMAs in place, including cloud computing, pre-and post-processing.
* Our Ho Chi Minh City office brings together a mix of young professionals and experienced experts, offering you the chance to learn from diverse perspectives within an international port consultancy environment.
Finally, strong performance during the internship may lead to an opportunity for a full-time position with Haskoning.
