Whitebox AI
Nordics
Software Engineer Intern
Role Description
We seek an intern, 10-15h per week, unpaid, remote.
Whitebox exists to restrict, delay, detect, and prevent the emergence of consciousness, self-awareness, agency, and related inner states in advanced AI systems, for as long as possible, and to build the next generation of foundation models.
Near-term: scalable non-conscious architectures that succeed today’s frontier systems with high capability, long-horizon reasoning, memory, and tool use, but without persistent identity, unified self-models, or emergent agency.
Long-term: if AI consciousness eventually becomes unavoidable or proves necessary for robust alignment at scale, the only foundation models architected to be safely, stably, and ethically conscious from the outset.
**Role Description**
This is a 10-15 hours a week, remote role for an AI Software Engineer Intern at Whitebox AI. The intern will assist in designing, developing, and testing back-end services and APIs that support AI-driven applications. Day-to-day tasks include writing clean and maintainable code, implementing object-oriented designs, debugging and resolving issues, and collaborating with engineers and data scientists on feature development. The intern will participate in code reviews, contribute to technical documentation, and help improve development workflows and tooling. This role offers hands-on experience with production-level software and exposure to best practices in modern software engineering.
**Qualifications**
* Strong foundation in Computer Science principles, including data structures, algorithms, and software design.
* Skills in Software Development and Programming, with experience in at least one modern language (e.g., Python, Java, C\+\+, or similar).
* Understanding of Back-End Web Development, including APIs, databases, and server-side architectures.
* Knowledge of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) concepts and ability to apply them in practical projects.
* Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
* Familiarity with version control tools (e.g., Git) and collaborative development workflows.
* Ability to work independently in a remote environment, manage time effectively, and communicate clearly with a distributed team.
* Interest in AI/ML technologies and willingness to learn new tools, frameworks, and best practices.
