Lam Research is a leading global manufacturer of capital equipment used in the production of advanced semiconductors worldwide. Lam primarily competes in four major process areas: deposition, etch, photoresist strip, and single-wafer clean. Lam Research India is organized across three major functional areas: Hardware, Software, and Operations. One of the major functional groups is LIGHT (Lam India Global Hardware Technology), which designs subassemblies and subsystems for Lam’s product platforms, enabling innovation for next-generation semiconductor manufacturing equipment while improving cost, reliability, and performance. The Customer Service Business Group (CSBG) focuses on enabling customers with premier lifecycle support for Lam’s installed base. CSBG drives improvements in system performance, productivity, safety, and reliability across customer fabs worldwide.
We are seeking a Product Engineering Intern to join the CSBG engineering team in Bangalore for a 6-month internship. This role focuses on applying physics-based reasoning, analytical modelling, and data analysis to understand process behaviour in advanced plasma etch and deposition systems. The intern will work closely with experienced engineers and scientists to analyse experimental data, develop simplified models of process behaviour, and generate insights that improve process understanding and platform robustness.
This internship is structured to enable meaningful technical contribution. High-performing interns may be considered for full-time opportunities based on technical performance and team fit.
**The Impact you’ll make**
--------------------------
As a modelling and engineering intern, you will help deepen understanding of plasma processing behaviour by connecting physical intuition, experimental data, and simplified modelling approaches. Your work will contribute to improved understanding of process sensitivities, variability drivers, and operational trade-offs across advanced etch and deposition platforms. You will gain hands-on experience working with real engineering datasets and complex physical systems encountered in semiconductor manufacturing.
**What You’ll do**
------------------
During the internship, you will contribute to engineering challenges such as:
* Plasma processing of advanced and emerging material systems
* Time-dependent or cyclic plasma processes with evolving surface interactions
* Chamber–surface conditioning effects and process stability
* Transport and reaction balance in complex geometries
* Film property sensitivity and process–performance coupling
**Key Responsibilities**
* Analyse experimental datasets to identify key drivers of process performance and variability
* Support development of simplified physics-based or analytical models describing plasma–surface interactions and process behaviour
* Perform structured data analysis to identify sensitivities and parameter interactions
* Assist in correlating model predictions with experimental observations
* Support hypothesis development and validation through targeted data interpretation
* Participate in parametric or sensitivity studies to understand process trade-offs
* Document modelling assumptions, analysis methodology, and key insights
* Present technical findings and collaborate with engineering teams during technical reviews
**Who we’re looking for**
-------------------------
Currently pursuing a Master’s degree (MS / MTech) in:
* Chemical Engineering
* Materials Science
* Applied Physics
* Chemistry
* or a related discipline with relevance to semiconductor equipment industry
Strong academic foundation in one or more of the following:
* Plasma physics
* Transport phenomena
* Surface kinetics or reaction engineering
* Fluid mechanics or electromagnetics
* Experience with computational or analytical tools such as: Python, MATLAB or similar numerical analysis platforms
**What You'll Gain**
--------------------
* Exposure to real-world semiconductor manufacturing challenges
* Experience applying physics and modelling to complex engineering systems
* Mentorship from experienced engineers and leaders
* Hands-on experience with industrial experimental datasets and engineering analysis
* Opportunity to contribute to meaningful engineering insights during the internship
**Preferred Qualifications**
----------------------------
* Coursework or research involving plasma processing or semiconductor manufacturing
* Experience developing physics-based models or numerical simulations
* Familiarity with solving ODEs/PDEs numerically
* Exposure to plasma systems such as ICP, CCP, RIE, ALE, ALD, or CVD
* Experience working with experimental datasets from laboratory or research environments
* Strong problem-solving skills and ability to translate physical intuition into quantitative analysis
* Strong written and verbal communication skills
**Our commitment**
