Our organization operates the California Research and Education Network (CalREN), a high-capacity computer network with more than 8,000 miles of optical fiber. The network serves over 20 million users across California, including the vast majority of K-20 students, together with educators, researchers, and individuals at other vital public-serving institutions. **POSITION SUMMARY:** Reporting to the Manager, Network Operations, the CENIC Operations Intern is a part-time, temporary student position. Applicants must be enrolled as students at an accredited college or university at the time of hire. Students interested in this internship must be available at least three (3\) days per week for at least five (5\) hours per day. Student summer interns cannot exceed twenty (25\) work hours per week. Students must be available to work during standard business hours, Monday through Friday, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. The schedule can be adjusted as needed for classes as long as the work hours are within the times stated above. Total hours worked per week are dependent on CENIC's business needs and may be changed by the supervisor at any time. **SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:** None. **LOCATION:** La Mirada, CA (Hybrid) **SCHEDULE:** This is an 8-week internship position/25 hours per week **ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:** * Documentation audits and updates * Updating customer contact information * Abuse ticket processing and follow-up * Security ticket processing and follow-up * Compiling Weekly Outage reports * OOB testing * ISO Vulnerability Remediation tracking * ISO software updates * ISO Infosec activity stream updates * Assisting fellow interns in understanding existing documentation and Network Operations processes * Providing other assistance as CENIC's business needs dictate **PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:** * Ability to lift moderately heavy (25 to 50 pounds) and heavy (over 50 pounds) objects, such as routers, switches, computers, and peripherals **KEY SUCCESS FACTORS:** * Independent worker with a high degree of self-motivation * Keen attention to detail, avoiding shortcuts that may adversely impact the quality of work * Ability to prioritize and complete tasks assigned in a timely manner * Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a team-oriented environment * Strong customer service orientation/ability * Adept at understanding technical information and learning new concepts * Strong analytical and problem-solving skills * Ability to consider, understand, and prioritize security (and privacy, where applicable) principles, practices, and procedures in all aspects of your role with CENIC. **REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:** * Currently pursuing an engineering, computer science, or networking/security education, or a recent graduate (within the past six months). * Cypress Community College student or recent graduate (within 6 months) **PREFERRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:** * Basic knowledge of IP-based networking, including knowledge of routing protocols * Familiarity with office productivity tools such as email, calendaring, and MS Office applications * Basic knowledge of computers and network security, **WORK ENVIRONMENT:** This position operates in a professional office environment with standard office equipment, including computers, telephones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. This position also includes work from home requirement. **WORK HOURS:** The Network Operations Center is a 24-hour per day/7 days per week/365 days per year operation. An employee’s work shift is based on CENIC’s business needs. *CENIC Operations Interns must be available a minimum of three (3\) days per week for at least five (5\) hours per day.* **Work Authorization:** Documented Proof of identity and legal eligibility to work in the United States.
