Postdoc in Data-driven Modelling and Optimisation for Fast Charging of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Gothenburg, Sweden
2026-03-17

Role Description

*Do you want to contribute to groundbreaking research in the intersection of battery systems and data-driven optimization? This is an exciting opportunity for a postdoctoral position at the Division of Systems and Control, Department of Electrical Engineering, focused on innovative research in Data-driven Modelling and Optimisation for Fast Charging of Lithium-Ion Batteries.* **About Us** At the department of Electrical Engineering research and education are performed in the areas of Communications, Antennas and Optical Networks, Systems and Control, Signal processing and Biomedical engineering, and Electric Power Engineering. We work with sustainable and smart solutions to societal challenges, such as energy efficiency and electrification in areas ranging from transport and production systems to communication solutions and biomedical engineering. The Automatic Control division conducts research and education in the analysis and control of dynamic systems. Our work combines fundamental control theory with applications in areas such as transportation, environmental and biological systems, and electric power systems. The division also teaches control engineering at both undergraduate and graduate level at Chalmers, including within the master’s programme *Systems, Control and Mechatronics* . **About The Research Project** Without accurate knowledge of the limiting conditions, Li-ion batteries are charged slowly yet still suffer from premature ageing. Lithium plating (LiP) is a dominant ageing mechanism and can cause internal short circuits, particularly during fast charging. The project aims to develop a safer, faster, and longer-lasting charging strategy for Li-ion cells using two complementary approaches. (1\) By testing commercial cells under various controllable stress factors and integrating lifetime prediction models, we will identify optimal fast-charging parameters using data-driven optimization methods. (2\) We will first design an optimal control strategy on laboratory three-electrode cells using anode potential feedback over the lifetime of the cells. The data will subsequently be used to develop a generalized model to adapt and apply this method to commercial battery cells (without reference electrode), in which transfer learning and robust control will be considered. This project is funded by the Swedish Research Council through a Project Grant and by the Swedish Innovation Agency through Batteries Sweden. Through this project, the postdoc will have opportunities to collaborate with Uppsala University, Volvo Trucks, ABB, and Husqvarna. Additionally, the postdoc may have the opportunity to be hosted by our group to apply for the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2026, for which we have a strong track record. **Who We Are Looking For** ***The following requirements are mandatory:*** * A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made * Strong written and verbal communication skills in English **The Following Experience Will Strengthen Your Application** * A doctoral degree in automatic control, electrical engineering, computational materials science or related. * Research experience in battery tests, machine learning, data-driven optimization, and/or robust control. **What You Will Do** * The major responsibility of the postdoc position is to (1\) pursue research in line with the project, (2\) based on the results, publish and present high-quality scientific articles, and (3\) take part in discussions * Supervise master’s and/or PhD students to a certain extent * Possibility to engage in teaching at undergraduate/master’s level The position is meritorious for future roles in academia, industry, or the public sector. **Contract terms** The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension. The position requires physical presence throughout the entire employment. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date, otherwise the offer may be withdrawn. **What We Offer** * As a postdoc at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits.
