Robotics Software Engineer Intern – Swarm Systems (m/f/d)
Role Description
What we offer
* Work in an international, agile team building autonomousroboticsystems
* Contribute to software thatistested on real robotic platforms and in the field
* Gain hands-on experiencewith state-of-the-art technologies in robotics, autonomy, and multi-agent systems
* Work closelywithexperiencedrobotics and embeddedengineers
* Take ownership of meaningfultechnicalprojectswhilereceiving guidance from the team
* Benefitfrom a steeplearningcurve and a collaborative engineering culture
Your mission
Join our robotics team working on autonomous systems that operate as coordinated, distributed agents in real-world environments.
As a Software Engineering Intern, you will contribute to the development and validation of our multi-UAV system, with a particular focus on software tooling, simulation, and system observability.
Depending on your background and the project, you may also contribute to areas such as SLAM, navigation, perception, planning, or multi-agent coordination. This is a hands-on internship where you will develop and test software, work with real robotic systems, and see how your work performs beyond simulation.
* Develop data-drivendashboards and tools to monitor, analyze, and visualize system performance
* Extendour simulation frameworkwith KPIs, automated scenarios, and evaluation workflows
* Analyze simulation and field-test data to identify issues and opportunities for improvement
* Contribute to the corerobotics stack in areas such as estimation, perception, planning, control, or mission execution
* Collaboratecloselywithrobotics, simulation, embedded, and domain experts
* Gain practicalexperiencedeveloping and validating software for complexautonomoussystems
Your profile
* Currentlypursuing or recentlycompleted a Master'sdegree in Robotics, Computer Science, AutonomousSystems, Electrical Engineering, or a relatedfield
* Good programmingskills in C\+\+, ideally modern C\+\+ (17/20\)
* Solid foundation in algorithms, data structures, and software engineering
* Basic understanding of robotics concepts such as coordinate frames, sensor data, estimation, planning, or control
* Comfortableworking in Linux
* Curious about complexroboticsystems and motivated to understand how thingsworkbeyondyourindividual component
* Able to workindependently on a definedtechnicalproblemwhileactivelyseeking feedback whenneeded
* Genuine interest in autonomoussystems, robotics, and defensetechnology
Nice to have
You do not need to bring all of these — experience from university projects, research, student teams, personal projects, or previous internships counts.
* Experiencewith ROS or ROS 2
* Experiencewith real robots, embeddedsystems, or hardware-in-the-loop setups
* Exposure to SLAM, navigation, computer vision, estimation, filtering, planning, or control
* Interest or experience in multi-agent systems, swarming, or distributedrobotics
* ExperienceworkingwithLiDAR or camera data
* Exposure to PX4 or ArduPilot
* Experiencewith simulation frameworkssuch as Gazebo, Isaac Sim, or Unreal Engine
* Experiencewithembedded platforms, GPUs, or networking
* Exposure to machine learningmethods
What else
* Strong problem-solvingmindset and willingness to learn
* Structured and reliable way of working
* Comfortableworking in an environmentwhere not everyproblem has a predefined solution
* Collaborative and open to technical feedback
* High ethical standards and disciplinedworkethic
* Extra-curricular engineering projects, roboticscompetitions, research, or othertechnicalachievements are a plus
**The practical part**
* Duration: 3–6 months, full-time
* Eligibility: NATO-alignednationality or close allycitizenshipisrequired
**About Us**
The world is changing. Exponential technologies are enabling new types of security threats. ATS is committed to staying ahead by building nimble, scalable, and cost-effective defences. We are looking for passionate team members who are eager to create exceptional products, safeguard our freedom, and strengthen the resilience of democracies.
**Who we are:**
Autonomous Teaming is a defence-tech start-up specializing in machine vision solutions. Driven by cutting-edge innovation, our team works on next-generation technologies designed to meet rapidly evolving security challenges.
**What we do:**
We develop systems that enable computers and sensors to operate as coordinated teams, collaborating in real time to counter AI-powered asymmetric threats at scale — including drone swarms and other UXVs. Our mission is to build resilient, intelligent defence capabilities that perform reliably in the most demanding environments.
**How we work:**
We value close, in-person collaboration as the foundation for building complex, high-impact technology, while maintaining flexibility aligned to role and team needs. Our culture is built on ownership, responsibility, and trust — with a shared commitment to growing and building together.
**Where we are:**
Based in Munich, Berlin, and Toulouse, we are expanding rapidly across Europe with plans to open additional office hubs.
