We launched RUA Map — a living, collaborative map that joins news, alerts, events and initiatives, promoting hyperlocal culture, strengthening local ties, inspiring active citizenship, and contributing to place-based memory. * RUA Map: ruamap.com | 1 pager: https://app.notion.com/p/rederua/RUA-O-mapa-onde-a-cidade-se-encontra-1-pager-2c6c8898eee980dab46bd13c220313ca * Manifesto: https://app.notion.com/p/rederua/Manifesto-RUA-2c0c8898eee98065b500c92d192c03f0 **Opportunity** We are looking for a Software Engineering Intern to help with our data ingestion and integration layer, and other supporting backend services. The work will involve Python services, external APIs, data transformation, scheduled jobs, debugging, testing and experimentation with AI applied to the domain. The role will managed directly by our CTO (Chief Technology Officer). **QUALIFICATIONS** We do not expect an intern to know our stack already. We are mainly looking for strong fundamentals, curiosity and the ability to learn quickly. * Good foundations in **Python, data structures and basic algorithms** . * Basic understanding of **HTTP, REST APIs and JSON** . * Basic knowledge of **SQL and relational databases** . * Familiarity with **Git** . * Ability to read and understand existing code before changing it. * Structured problem-solving and debugging skills. * Attention to data correctness, edge cases and system behaviour. * Good testing habits and care in verifying changes properly. * Ability to communicate clearly about what was changed, why and how it was tested. * Curiosity about how systems work beyond the immediate task. * Curiosity to **experiment with AI applied to the domain** , including content understanding, enrichment, classification, extraction and automation. * Strong English or Portuguese language skills (writing, reading and conversing) are necessary, familiarity with both is a plus. Experience with **Django, Docker, pytest, data pipelines, web scraping, third-party API integrations or applied AI/LLM tooling** is useful, but not required. **LEARNING PATH** The internship will progress from: **Understanding and debugging existing integrations** **→ making small changes** **→ owning a simple importer or helper service** **→ experimenting with AI-assisted capabilities** **→ handling a bounded engineering task with increasing independence.** The objective is to build practical experience with production Python systems, APIs, data pipelines, testing, backend engineering and applied AI. **COMPENSATION STRUCTURE** This role is a remote, junior level/intern, part time role. The weekly schedule is flexible, but some regular availability between the hours of 10h and 18h is necessary for remote meetings with other members of the team. Compensation structure is 600-800€/month for 20h/week, Recibos Verdes (depending on experience). This role is currently offered as a temporary role (expected 6 months), but may be extended into a salaried position for the right candidate. **APPLICATION PROCESS** Please apply via LinkedIn (or by sending an email to [email protected] with your CV and letter of motivation) **by end of day Sunday, October 11** . We will then review the applications and reach out to schedule brief interviews with selected candidates the week of October 12. We are expecting two rounds of interviews, and hope to have this candidate onboarded by the end of October.
