Role Description
Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (IKIM), University Hospital Essen | Hufelandstr. 55, 45147 Essen, on-site | 16-19 h/week | start date: ASAP, 1 year
**ABOUT THE PROJECT**
As part of an IFoRes-funded project at IKIM, we develop in-house AI platforms that support clinicians in their daily work, from clinical documentation to data-driven decision support. Our tools run on our own infrastructure and are used in routine care at University Hospital Essen.
**YOUR ROLE**
You work between the clinicians who use our tools and the developers who build them. You turn clinical needs into clear product tasks and help build and check the solutions.
**Product**
* Talk to clinicians and department staff, observe how they work, and turn their needs into user stories with clear acceptance criteria
* Triage and prioritise user feedback and bug reports, and reproduce issues
* Write specs and small mockups for new features and test them with users
* Help plan rollouts to new departments (onboarding, training material, feedback rounds)
**Technical**
* Evaluate the quality of speech recognition and LLM output: build small test sets, define metrics, run comparisons, report findings
* Develop and test prompts for clinical text generation and department-specific terminology
* Write and run tests and check new features end to end in the browser
* Build and improve frontend features in our web apps (Vue 3, TypeScript), with review from the team
* Implement small features and fixes in the API
* Document features, decisions and workflows
**KEY REQUIREMENTS**
* Degree: enrolled student (Bachelor or Master)
* Field: computer science, medical informatics, data science or related
* German: at least B1
* English: at least B2
* Hours: 16-19 h/week, for 1 year
**WHAT YOU BRING**
**Must have**
* Enrolled student (Bachelor/Master) in computer science, medical informatics, data science or a related field (medicine with strong programming skills is also welcome)
* Solid programming skills, ideally TypeScript/JavaScript or Python
* Ability to take a vague request, ask the right questions and turn it into a precise task
* Clear written and spoken German and English (clinical contact is mostly in German) (B1 can apply)
* A careful, independent way of working; you check your own results
**Nice to have**
* Experience with Vue 3, Node.js/Express, SQL or REST APIs
* Experience with LLMs, prompt engineering or evaluating NLP/ASR systems (e.g. WER)
* Experience with git, code review and writing tests
* Interest in clinical workflows, or prior work in a hospital or health-tech setting
* Awareness of data protection in healthcare (GDPR, handling patient data)
**WHAT WE OFFER**
* Real impact: your work is used by clinicians every day
* Hands-on work with current speech and language models on our own GPU infrastructure
* Close mentoring by the developers and direct access to clinical users
* Flexible hours around your lectures and exams
* Option to contribute to publications and evaluation studies
* Pay: €15.20 per hour gross (student assistant/SHK rate), e.g. €1,255.70 per month at 19 h/week
