Internship - Frequency analysis (4-6 months)

Vénissieux, France
2026-10-13

Role Description

**VESUVIUS** is an international group with 11,000 employees worldwide. We propose a wide range of highly technical products and services in the sector Iron & Steel making. Our division, part of the Flow Control Business Unit of Vesuvius, is focused on providing advanced control and instrumentation solutions that improve the overall performance of the steel continuous casting process. Its solutions are complementary to the Vesuvius advanced refractory products. The digital services products are sold globally. **Topic:** Vesuvius develops and commercialize for years a system called “Bulgesafe”, which is intended to compensate an oscillation phenomenon (known as “bulging” in the steel industry, an unwanted disturbance) in a liquid steel bath of a continuous caster machine. In details, a PC-based real time kernel will acquire a signal (the hot liquid steel level in the mold), make a frequency analysis to find 1 or several frequencies of “bulging” in a given frequency range, calculate a compensation signal that will be sent to the actuator which controls the liquid steel flow in the mold to reduce significantly the amplitude of the “bulging” disturbance. A very good accuracy in frequency detection is required: 0.01Hz accuracy in a range between ~0.03 and ~0.8Hz. Currently the frequency analysis is done by FFT, and to reach the desired accuracy an analysis window of several hundreds of seconds is required. Most of the time it provides very satisfying results, but from time to time, casting conditions changes, and thus disturbance frequencies also change. As the systems requires long analysis windows of hundreds of seconds, the system reactivity is poor in these transient phases. The purpose of the internship is to find techniques/algorithms/analyses to reduce the reaction time of the system in the transient phases, while keeping the same accuracy, which is a must. **Tasks:** -      Understand the continuous casting process -      Understand the working principle of current algorithm: why some solutions/values have been chosen -      Make a complete “state of the art” on the frequency analysis solutions: FFT, wavelets, … -      Make pros and cons of each technique in the context of our system -      Define the best solution/combination and test trough simulation software (Matlab or equivalent, …) -      Implement the solution in the real time Kernel (C language) -      Test the performances of the system to show the improvement in reactivity **Knowledge, experience and skills needed:** -      Programming (C/C++) -      Signal processing/simulation -      Frequency analysis, including other techniques than FFT **Level:** Engineer, last year internship (Bac+5) Duration:                    6 months Language skills:        Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, French a plus. Location:                    Vesuvius SERT                                    41 Boulevard Marcel Sembat                                    69200 VENISSIEUX - FRANCE Contact:                     email CV and supporting letter to Corentin PICARD                                    [email protected]
